Strasbourg – The Ponts Couverts Area

The Barrage Vauban. We discovered the best way to get there and experience it is enter the south end, walk through the inside. There are some statues that have been removed from a church, including several gargoyles, so it is really a must see, lol. At the north end climb the stairs and walk back to the south end taking in the views of the area.

The interior hallway, I’ll spare any readers of my ramblings all the gargoyle photos I took
The top is not hard to reach and once there it wide open
The cathedral at the center in the distance
The views are so serene

Besides all the wonderful views and sights in the old city section of Strasbourg, it also very small and one can walk from one side of it to the other in only twenty minutes. Of course will all the things to stop and look at it takes far longer. One guide book said you could see all of Strasbourg in three hours. It was a book for tourists not travelers like us who like to stop and savor where we are. The unique blend of French and German culture is something to be experienced, not just seen in passing.

A Glimpse Into Our Future

Next week we will be traveling down the Canal du Midi on the other side of France with three other couples in a self drive boat. We will be passing through dozens and dozens of canals dur our two weeks on the canal.

Coming into the lock
The lock gates close
The water gates open and water begins to pour into the lock
The water rises higher lifting the boat
The gates now open and the boat continues on

Strasbourg Bits and Pieces

It is always interesting what the hotels or apartments we pick turn out to be. Hotel Gutenberg proved to be an excellent choice. It is only a three minute walk from the tram stop and just a block from the cathedral area. The building is old but the interior is very modern. My wife always takes the elevator up to our floor, while I opt for the stairs. Using them I get a glimpse of what the interior might have looked like in the past.

Travel is what you make it

Not everyone travels the same way. This a Viking River Cruise day excursion group . When we exited the hotel they were right across the street and the guide was pointing out details on the exterior of our hotel. We joke that when we get old and can’t get around is when we will do the river cruises and such. Now we are just not into large groups.

The kugelhopf I had for breakfast yesterday morning (and really enjoyed) comes in all sizes. This one in a boulangerie patisserie just down the street from the hotel was over 15 pounds. My wife tried a piece this morning and decided it was too dry for her. I tried a different cake this morning with a chocolate center, it was another excellent choice. I wonder what tomorrow morning will bring. One I thing I know for sure is it will bring more munster cheese, cause the worse they smell the better they taste.

Strasbourg – Parc de l’Orangerie

How we travel around in Strasbourg. The tram system is excellent, the trams are all modern and very clean and the trams run very frequently. And best of all, even though we had to change tram lines to get to the park, we never did get off at a wrong stop.

The park is famous for its storks

One should always take a path through the woods to see where it leads
